G.Re.T.A. has been invited to contribute to the new BRESO initiative for training and accreditation of breast surgical oncologists across Europe.
In the past Breast surgery was simple and general surgeons were able to perform it easily. Nowadays, as demonstrated in one of our papers on decision making pathways, specialized breast surgeons should have complex and multidisciplinary skills. These may involve: refined techniques of plastic surgery, good knowledge of systemic treatment either in the pre-op or post-op, good ability in reading modern imaging not only for diagnostic purposes but also for surgical planning and, lust but not least excellent interaction with patients for good shared decision making. In spite of this the surgical training is still not dedicated, being part of general surgery or gynaecology training. For this reason, the BRESO initiative set up a basic theoretical and practical cv for European Breast Surgeons as part of a standard international certification process.

The BRESO certification will be developed at two levels: Tier 1 for basic training and Tier 2 for advanced level skills. The training will last at least a minimum of two years either during training or post residency. Prof. Nava, our Honorary Chairman is one of the senior authors of this BRESO “manifesto”, together with Giuseppe Catanuto. Both of them contributed to the development of this project as part of the theoretical and practical working-group bringing the experience of G.Re.T.A. in careers development with courses, International fellowships and Conferences.

You can find here the paper that was recently published on EJSO that provide all the details regarding the BRESO certification process.

Thank you.
