Maurizio Nava, our Honorary Chairman and Founder, was invited by Allergan Medical Institute to co-chair the Plastic Surgery Clinical & Technical Forum held in Berlin last 26th and 27th of July 2018. I was very impressed by the very high level of the presentations delivered demonstrating very top surgical skills and scientific knowledge. Sometimes, especially if you have a solid oncological background you may feel a little bit biased when attending meetings organized by companies working in the cosmetic and plastic surgery field. I believe we all acknowledge that evidence based medicine has never figured a way to punch through in this field. It is amazing to notice that the most important journals in plastic surgery expose a funny colored pyramid to indicate the level of evidence of the studies presented and most of these are showing level 5 evidence. So if the opinion of an expert is still the best I can get, well I want the opinion of the best experts from all over the world. And there you go! Charles Randquist and Maurizio were the two co-chairman, but we also had Mark Clemens, Mitch Brown, and Mike Dikson who provided the audience with a very high level of expertise and, of course top experts opinions.
But it was not all about technical skills. Except from the fabulous cosmetic results presented and the synthetic nomograms that Maurizio refines every year, day by day, I was surprised by two outstanding presentations done by Dawn Harper, a GP (both non only! Embarrassing Bodies?) and Simon Moore (psychologist). I have to congratulate for this with the company committee. Both Dr. Harper and Dr. Moore demonstrated how difficult can be communicating with patients about, disease, body image and personal wishes. I believe that our work in breast surgery requires top skills, but not only top surgical skills. We need a specific ability in interacting with patients to fully understand real requests, eliminate poor information, and offer them a full control on body image and decisions on their health and quality of life.
